Honeybee navigation
نویسنده
چکیده
How do bees estimate distance flown? It appears that they use one or both of the following cues. The first comes from measuring the amount of energy consumed when they fly to the destination by the reduction in the volume of their nectar-laden stomachs; the greater the energy consumed, the further the distance. And the second comes from measuring how much the image of the world appears to move in the eye as they fly to the destination; the greater the extent of image motion, the further the distance.

متن کاملOdin and Hodur: Using Bluetooth Communication for Coordinated Robotic Search
This paper describes a multi-robot system designed to use Bluetooth wireless communication to solve the “Honeybee” task. The Honeybee task is a simple search and navigation problem that requires a “guide” robot to lead another “blind” robot to a specific target within the environment. Topics discussed include advantages and disadvantages of using Bluetooth in robotics, as well as a variety of b...
متن کاملEffects of sub-lethal doses of glyphosate on honeybee navigation.
Glyphosate (GLY) is a herbicide that is widely used in agriculture for weed control. Although reports about the impact of GLY in snails, crustaceans and amphibians exist, few studies have investigated its sub-lethal effects in non-target organisms such as the honeybee Apis mellifera, the main pollen vector in commercial crops. Here, we tested whether exposure to three sub-lethal concentrations ...
متن کاملNeonicotinoids Interfere with Specific Components of Navigation in Honeybees
Three neonicotinoids, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid, agonists of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the central brain of insects, were applied at non-lethal doses in order to test their effects on honeybee navigation. A catch-and-release experimental design was applied in which feeder trained bees were caught when arriving at the feeder, treated with one of the neonicotinoids,...
متن کاملRandolf Menzel
Randolf Menzel has been a professor of zoology and head of the Neurobiology Unit at the Freie Universität Berlin since 1976. His group studies sensory physiology — in particular, olfaction and vision — navigation, communication, learning and memory in the honeybee, with an emphasis on the underlying neural mechanisms. His aim is to relate different forms of memory to their respective neural str...
متن کاملTwo spatial memories for honeybee navigation.
Insect navigation is thought to be based on an egocentric reference system which relates vector information derived from path integration to views of landmarks experienced en route and at the goal. Here we show that honeybees also possess an allocentric form of spatial memory which allows localization of multiple places relative to the intended goal, the hive. The egocentric route memory, which...
